I had it bad, in all capital letters. B-A-D.

Never in my life had I felt this way about a woman before. It was like Sarah had managed to consume me without even trying. It was like she’d opened up her mouth and swallowed me whole, and I could do nothing but sit there, completely at her mercy, praying that she would one day come and join me in the black caverns of my intense emotions.

Then, just as heavily as they had come, those feelings would begin to dissipate, and I’d realize that I was absolutely insane. She clearly didn’t return my feelings, or she would have said something by now. If there was one thing that I knew about Sarah, it was that she was a woman who spoke her mind, no matter the circumstances. She didn’t keep anything inside just because it might not be proper or kosher to speak about in public.

And she hadn’t said a word about those feelings. The argument could be made that the act of sex in and of itself was an admission, but at the same time, I used to have plenty of emotionless sex. Actions that meant nothing, whose only outcome was a temporary burst of pleasure, which would soon fall away, and my normal fugue state would return. It was absolutely possible that this was simply how Sarah felt, and she just hadn’t been able to say it to me yet.

Those thoughts were all running rampant in my head, making me certain one moment and then doubtful the next. I’d decide that Sarah must have felt similarly, as I did, one second, and then the next, I would decide that she couldn’t possibly, and it had all been in my head. I damn near couldn’t make up my mind, which was what drove me to call her at ten-thirty that night. Now, I knew good and well that it was a terrible hour to call an employee. I never would have done it with anyone else, not even Francesca, who would have heeded my call like a lost puppy and never said another word about it.

But Sarah was the only one who I was gutsy enough to call down to the office at half-past ten o’clock at night, and the truth was that I wanted nothing other than to see her. I hadn’t been able to get the feeling of her off of my mind since earlier that day, and I wanted nothing more than to be inside of her again, to feel the soft silkiness of her glorious folds as they surrounded me, bringing me to the highest high I’d ever experienced.

And I used to do drugs, wonderful, expensive drugs, so that was saying a lot.

I could tell she was mad. She made sure I knew, too, but that didn’t make me change my mind. I would have much rather have Sarah angry with me, and in the office where I could see and appreciate her, than have her angry
